Darkie toothpaste! The extent to which racisim goes always suprises me. Apparently back in the day there was a “special” toothpaste created for African Americans only. Can you guess what its name was? I bet you can’t. It was called “Darkie Toothpaste” before they changed it to “Darlie”. To think that people dehumanized African Americans so much so that we could not even use the same toothpaste as other races. Yes this sh*t is real.
The Chinese name of the brand, in English, “Black Man Toothpaste”), has not changed; in fact, a Chinese-language advertising campaign reassured customers that “Black Man Toothpaste is still Black Man Toothpaste”. This is because the term does not have any negative meaning in Chinese. The phrase in Chinese is a general term for persons of African descent. The toothpaste is very popular in some Asian countries, including Malaysia, Thailand and the People’s Republic of China. The toothpaste can be found in Asian retailers in North America and Western Europe. (Wikipedia)
That all sounds good but why did anyone feel a need to create a “special” toothpaste for African Americans? What is up with the guy on the original ad? Can we say mockery? I’m just saying…
Take a look….
