When I heard about the new web series Buppies starring Tatyana Ali, I was excited. Hoping that despite the fact that it was a web series, the time limit would not work against it. Perhaps, this show will be entertaining, maybe even enlightening on some level. Perhaps this will be BET’s chance to rescue themselves from a world of ass jiggling, superficial concepts, lack luster acting and other coonery. God knows BET needs it. I was wrong. I watched the first episode and thus far, I am not impressed or interested.
I get the concept of a buppie being a Black spoiled shell like yuppie kid, but does the story line have to be equally empty? I finished watching the show feeling like something is missing there. With the stereotypical gangsta’s, the valley girls, and players. Things were not natural. Perhaps it was the actors and actresses who were weak. It could also be the script. Even Tatyana Ali could not save the corny lines, porch monkey antics and forgettable acting of her costars. There was just as much booty shaking as any other BET video. The back stabbing and selfish qualities of the costars that were meant to be funny left me wondering why Ali’s character hangs with these obnoxious people. It pains me to admit that there isn’ t anything special or unique about this show to make me want to continue to watch it. Sigh. This is the first episode so perhaps they will offer more as it goes on. However, they are only allotted 10 episodes so they might want to get the ball rolling. I am trying to support BET but if this is it. I will pass. Am I expecting too much?

I appreciate your review, as I heard about Buppies on an NPR segment and was worried the show may fail to generate interest because its on the web. Nevertheless, I actually think the show is making your point . . . It seems to poke fun at the very things you’re taking serious. The tagline for the show is as follows
“Chronicles the relationship dramas of a crew of young Black professionals attempting to mine the meaning of life in Hollywood’s social wasteland”.
We’ll see as the show develops but I have good expectations. This is not a BET production and the production company that did the show had a film at Sundance earlier this year. It’s fair to take a deeper look. Thanks for bringing up this topic and we’ll see how the show develops. . . Good luck Buppies, I’m watching!

Honestly, after reading ur review I really didn’t want to see the show and wasn’t going to. However, I accidentally ran into a B.Scott interview Taytiana did and decide to check it out, and honestly I REALLY enjoy it. A lot. I think you were looking for too much in ur deeper look, it’s not shallow by any means, but it’s meant to entertain, not really enlighten. It’s funny, ’cause becuase I wasn’t gonna give it a chance for 4 weeks I was able to catch up really fast and watch 4 back to back episodes which was a plus ’cause I’m not the type who likes to wait in between episodes when I’ve found a show I really like lol.
Another plus is each episode is between 3-5 minutes so it’s not consuming a huge amount of unnecessary time. Maybe the time constraints are why the show can’t really go deeper like you’d like? But I think there are definitely characters with layers…especially that no good cheating husband! lol
