My Mother always says that in this day and age, it seems as if boys want to be girls. She would say that they want to dress like us, wear the same colors we do, etc.. Mind you, she is not talking about homosexuals. Just, men who dress and conduct themselves like in what is deemed to be feminine mannerisms. You know the ones. The man who never wants to work but expects his girlfriend to work and care for him. The man who never wants to pay for a date and somehow expects for the woman to constantly pay for them. The whiny man who feels he should not have to work hard for anything as a man, but it should be giving to him. Or the woman who coddles her son so much that when he becomes a man, he is unable to care for himself and stand on his own because he was never taught or made to. I would of course defend my generations right to dare to be different and say “Oh mom, what are you talking about? That is not true, blah, blah”.
Well, it is getting more and more difficult for me to disagree with my mom when I see images like the ones below in the media. They are being forced into our subconscious so that we feel that this kind of mess is okay. I remember reading about guys in Japan wearing skirts but I hoped it would not cross over here. I am all for fashion and being open and on the leading edge but this looks and seems foolish. I for one would rather not see any man’s hairy legs strolling around downtown L.A. in a sexy skirt. Call me closed minded, but no men should wear skirts. Genders should not mesh in this way. Clothes may not define your gender but they are an expression of oneself. What is a man trying to say by wearing a skirt? Or is it simply to push the envelope? I could care less how long Scottish man have been wearing kilts or what happen during B.C. and whatever other excuse one can come up with to defend this. That was their time period not ours. In 2010 this is just another clever way to blend the gender lines disguised as a new wave of fashion. Let us please send a special thank you to H And M for designing these little numbers. Also, let us thank them for assisting in squeezing every last drip of manhood from this generation of males. For the ladies who are going to come at my head for for being sexist I want to ask you this and I want you to answer honestly: How would you feel if the man you were dating came over dressed in one of these sexy skirts, ashy knees and all?
Guys, would you invest your dollars in this fashion sense? Ladies, what would you say if your date arrived to pick you up, looking like this? I cannot be the only one who would send him home….

After all, pants were not widely used by any society more than three hundred years ago. – Pants were originally an invention to make it easier to ride a horse. The idea stuck, and the two-legged garment became standard apparel for working men to stave off cold and abrasion.
At the onset of the industrial age, Levi’s were probably the most popular mass-produced garment made for men. Sewn of heavy canvas, Levi’s jeans were designed to stave of the scrapes of workman’s toil. The political rise of the working class in the 1800’s transformed the workman’s attire into a symbol of raw power against the pompous and flagrantly dressed gentile statesman at the polar ends of the political and fashion spectrum. The power struggle of the working class has since grayed into the history books. So many men today live comfortable lives transporting themselves from their cozy homes, to their climaxed controlled cars, and into their environmentally shielded workspaces. Their female counterparts, transgressed long ago into the once male-dominated career lifestyle, are comfortably donning non-bifurcated garments as they go off to work and play.
The idea of men wearing skirts in today’s sex polarized society is a hot subject in certain corners of the Internet. Is it cross-dressing or is it the reemergence of an old-world fashion trend? – The topic is frequently debated in various Internet discussion groups and forums. For the most part, there is widespread interest and at least moderate acceptance of the ‘men wearing skirts’ idea in one form or another.
It seems that many men are rediscovering the comfort and practicality of the skirt. (Men’s skirts are often referred to as kilts, sarongs or pareos for those who are fearful to associate the word “skirt” with men. – Get over it, it’s just a word). Just as the idea of women wearing pant’s can equally be argued as fashion in most casual living situations.
In other parts of the world such as the South Pacific, Indonesia, Africa, Middle East, India, and the Philippians it is common to see men wearing skirts and other non-bifurcated garments. Certain cultures like Scotland and Greece maintain kilts and men’s style skirts as formal military attire. After many brief showings on the runways of Paris and Milan over the last couple of decades, it seams that the men’s skirt trend is starting to stick. The main reason for hesitance over the years is the overwhelming fear by most men for being identified as homosexual.
However, subculture stigma seams to be having a diminishing influence on the emerging men’s skirt market for heterosexual males.
The trend is not about feminine skirts for men but rather masculine skirt designs that are made for the male body shape.
Skirts made for men are appearing in a wide range of social circles from hikers and runners to carpenters and artists. Currently, the most common skirt configuration worn by men is a modern adaptation of the Scottish kilt. Previously relegated to traditional dress, the kilt has seen a recent rise in popularity beyond the borders of its Scottish heritage. (A kilt is a special type of pleated skirt that wraps around the waist and has an overlapping front.) A number of manufacturers are now offering modern kilts for men. Companies like Stillwater kilts, Utilikilt, Amerikilt and Union Kilt have taken an old idea and revitalized it with heavy-duty construction complete with cargo pockets and tool holders. unfortunately, MOST people are so indoctrinated by their parents/teachers/clergy/peers/etc to completely FEAR any possible hint of homosexuality, that the idea of men in skirts makes their little-bitty mind cramp up and nothing new can get in.
if women wear and ENJOY certain items of clothing, then there is no logical argument against men wearing and enjoying them.
the only exceptions would be anatomically needed items, such as bras and (in reverse) jock-straps. these items are designed purely for the needed support of sex-specific body parts.
otherwise, a pair of shoes that fit well and are enjoyable on barbara could equally be enjoyed by bart, so long as they fit correctly and appeal to his easthetics the way they appeal to barb’s.

While it is true that other heritages, cultures and time periods have been known to wear kilts or togas (very much a full length dress), there is a separation for a reason. Think of how your mentality would change if you, a completely heterosexual male, wore skirts every day and it was fully embraced by the public at large as acceptable. Everyone at work wears them, everyone at church wears them, everyone at football games (including the players) wear them and your son wants one. What next, will you be just as okay with him wearing a matching purse along with it–not backpack, not messenger bag but full on, frilly, aquamarine rhinestone studded purse with built in compact and tampon holder? How about a little rouge with that? I don’t know about you but I can not and will not say that a 6′3 basketball player sized guy in stilettos and hoop earrings is anything other than what I’ve seen it to be; homosexual. If you’re gay, be gay. It makes me no difference but don’t ride the fence and make the rest of us secure with our manhood uneasy. What LJ was saying is that the lines distinguishing male and female are purposely being eroded in the name of fashion. There are already almost no television shows for men out and now we have rationalization for something that was taboo for a reason! First, as a man, I have to apologize for my half of the species. We are not as belligerant, crude, closed-minded (notice how he had to say he isn’t, while boldly displaying that he is?), insecure, judgemental, uncreative, or any of the other impressions conveyed by the post. Obviously, he is threatened somehow, which does not speak well of manhood, if someone else’s fashion choices are going to be damaging. Thank ghod he does not speak for all men.
Second, it is 2010 now. Time to stop the wrong-headed notion that how one dresses is a reflection of one’s sexuality. I applaud you for being man enough to admit that you don’t mind seeing men in women’s attire (rightly called so because skirts are generally found in WOMEN’s departments) and while that is no critique on your sexuality, I can’t help but wonder if you would walk around in one. Freedom of choice notwithstanding, the absolute ridiculousness of a man wearing female garb just because he likes it is rather suspect in itself. I have to totally agree with LJ on this one. And I don’t feel she or her mother is wrong at all. “Real men” are a dying species, and while there is earnest disagreement on here—some very well presented and others not so much, I have to say that while it could be considered close-minded I have to stand firm in my belief that men should not wear skirts/dresses/feminine colors no matter the reason–unless pink is just his best color. And no, I don’t mean that sarcastically, there are some men who actually look incredibly sexy in pink due to their complexion. My VERY heterosexual best friend is a red head and pink oxford cloth shirts make him look AMAZING but that is a VERY rare exception. LJ is right. Men these days are not learning to be men at all, and all the more are wanting to be like women more and more. They get manicures, pimp (the opposite of provide), and are ever more unprepared to take care of themselves nonetheless a family. I’m not saying men can’t cry or be hygenic, but they need to “man up” and stop being wussies…I’m out.

Just had to post on this one. For years working in the Caribbean on boats I have worn shorts of finger tip length. This is about the usual apparel of boat crews. Your still going to see our hairy legs in these unless you prefer us to shave our leg, but then you are the type to whine about that also.
I am a diesel mechanic and also a welder and machinist so I feel I do masculine enough work to your liking. A skirt would not be a good item of clothing for crawling around in the bilge or across large engines so it is shorts for that. However when in the shop welding and fabricating parts or at the lathe or milling machine I prefer a nice denim skirt of the same length as my shorts. The extra air or breeze up there feel great in this tropical heat.
Another good reason to wear skirts for me anyway is to shock or even piss off prissy little bitches like yourself. Guess it is just a throw back from my days in the 60’s when we were shocking your closed minded dumb ass mother.

Wearing a skirt or a dress does not change a man’s psychological makeup anymore so than a women who wears pants causes her to have lesbian inclinations. Why do women wear pants if they wish to keep clothing gender specific? All men do not have hairy legs anymore so than all women who wear pants may be presumed to be as hairy as a monkey. Who hasn’t seen women in jeans with holes in the knees? Ugly to say the least. Most men don’t appreciate today’s sloppily attired women. Since most women has lost every last drop of their femininity it is indeed ironic that they are concerned about men losing their manhood. If I were built like a woman I would wear pants. Since I’m not I prefer not to have my male parts bruised; likewise, I prefer not to adjust my penis within a pair of pants to avoid discomfort.

Leave the dresses to the women because how would you feel if you had to explain to your 5 year old son why a man is wearing a dress…He is going to start thinking that it is okay to wear dresses and to wear “man purses”, we need to be more of a role model and teach the younger generation to be men.

It’s just sad to see that people opposing this fashion freedom in the comments here use the very same arguments that were used to discriminate against women for a long time, just swapped.
Men should be real men again? Well, what is a real man then? Working for the family and bringing in the money that a woman can spend it on pretty things, if she’s not at home and cooking or cleaning, which are her traditional tasks in that scenario i assume? What an archaic and very sexist view of the world. I am very glad we got over these times and left them behind for good.
By rejecting new fashion just because “I don’t like it and it’s for wussies”, you’d have to reject the opposite for women too. Stop wearing male clothes, meaning trousers, and go back to frilly dresses and skirts, since you claim they’re so brilliantly female.
Women aren’t tomboys or crossdressers either if they wear trousers, so why do you call men that?
In some muslim countries they would get whipped if they’re spotted wearing trousers, did you know that?
And here, you verbally whip men wanting to wear a skirt, by labelling them gay (which is also discriminating against homosexuals, by the way).
I find all this fuss quite rediculous over a bit of cloth just because it is not sewn together in the middle.

This is so funny. Did any of you see the movie Grease with the guys wearing skinny jeans. I was born in 51 and remember skin tight jeans down to the ankles with white socks and black pointed toe shoes. This was mostly my older brothers thing. By the time I was in my teens it was mid 60’s. No more greased down hair with the DA (ducks ass) like my brother it was long hair. My parents generation said we all looked queer. Bubba down south would cat whistle at us and call us fags. Later bubba decided it was cool and grew long hair. Low rise unisex jeans were the norm and the start of men wearing girls jeans. ( It is said that 50% of women”s jeans are sold to men ) With my full butt women’s jeans fit well and don’t show plumbers butt when I bend over. Low rise jeans with huge bell bottoms were in and men who were man enough even wore pink. Shoulder bags came in. All this has come full circle. It is still as much fun today as in the 60’s to shock the shallow mind morons mostly the idiots who say they are the moral majority. ( they are neither )

Several posters talk about men wearing womens clothes to look like women. The whole point about the Men in Skirts movement is that these men do NOT want to wear womens skirts, they want to wear blokey skirts. They do NOT want o look like women. They just want to be men whose clothing doesn’t crush their nuts.
As for explaining to a five-year-old why that man is wearing a skirt, how about

Even with all of the statements made valiantly holding up the flag for freedom of fashion choices there’s still one thing that hasn’t been touched on here: perception. Perception is, unfortunate and unfair as it may be, reality and your clothes dictate much about what people initially think of you. I’m not for men wearing skirts but if you so choose to, go for it. You can ask for other people’s understanding all you want but in some circumstances a man wearing a skirt will be frowned upon. That’s just the way it is. It may not be right but that’s the way it is. Asians are perceived to be technologically savvy, Blacks are perceived to be great at sports and White Men Can’t Jump. Men wearing skirts, dresses or Beyonce-esque leotards, no matter how much brawn they pack, are perceived to be womanly. Again, it may not be right but until the view is changed, the view hasn’t changed.

Maybe it’s just me, but it sounds like the man the OP describes – lazy, unemployed, probably unemployable, coddled – seems like the type to lounge around home in a wife-beater or oversized white t-shirt, basketball shorts or jeans too big for even a belt’s help, and Air Force 1s with a way-too-big fitted hat at all times.
As a professional and a cross-dresser (and a heterosexual, it should be noted), I understand that each element has its time and place. I can’t decide to throw on a “Freak’um dress” and stilettos at my job because, bottom line, it’d be unprofessional for even a woman to wear. It’s equally prudent for me to know my body type and thus wear styles that don’t make me look ridiculous. I can’t pull off anything Beyonce would wear to an awards show, but my body type suggests, say, a kimono top with slim jeans and pumps. It’s all about knowing your body and there are more than a few women who don’t have that down-pat despite living with their bodies all their lives (and I’ve only cross-dressed for under five years).
Tying this all together, I work for mine, so I can buy my blazers, slacks, and Cole Haans as well as I can buy my tunics, skirts, and heels. I don’t see the correlation between an unmotivated man and a man who’s bold enough and daring enough to act on his willingness to cross-dress.

It’s interesting to note that some men are to be treated as such by the clothes they ware. And others by the sons they leave behind and the values they pursue.
Life is not about silk, linen, cotton or leather. Life is short, and deserves to be lived straight forward. As Bob states above, clothing should be lead by the type of use you apply to it, and not to the gender. Skirts are wonderful in summer and are a pain in the brain in winter. So, if you are in a beach in summer why not use loose clothing, sandals or whatever. Who cares?
I believe things are for our use and not to serve them as gender stigmas.

Men wearing skirts is not right, especially if you’re from the U.S. Gay men cry about being teased then go off and do some flamboyant mess like this. So leave the skirts for the ladies, its bad enough “real men” are wearing nut huggers and thongs on the regular now.

well over time this has become a very heated debate… but as a woman I can say HELL TO THE NO. I’m all for being pc and I’m down with wearing what u want. As long as u don’t show up at my house like that. If u dress that way let me know up front so I can turn yo ass around.There is no man I know or would date thats wants to wear a skirt. Come on we should not be in the same depatment looking for matching shit, don’t ask ” bay u think I look good in this?”For all those that agree that it’s ok good… no prob. But it border line, over the top strange. Closed minded no, but that shit is gay… why would you do that? As one has said it leads to other things. And for the people who have replied (that don’t agree) to call LJ out of her name, you probaly gay which is cool but this article was for straight men who like this type of clothing… so you are the only bitch up in here that needs to shut the fuck up. It was no need to be rude asshole. And futher more I read LJ’s article often and think (though I may not agree with all) they are very straight forward from the title. Forgot to add that those who think clothes should not make you… you’re right, but we use them to express our self. So some say if you feelin like a ho you dress like a ho, lady like you dress as such, feeling manly you do the same, but if you’re feeling a bit fruity just wear a skirt. Because that would be the point were you expess you’re self.

What I put on my body has no bearing on whom I want to take to bed. Just because one day I choose to wear a skirt instead of slacks, or a pair of pumps instead of a pair of Pumas, doesn’t mean my brain changes and I suddenly find men attractive. Sexuality simply doesn’t work that way, and it never will.
Gay men typically find masculinity attractive, so I would find it a trifle difficult to believe that a gay man would try to approach me while en femme. Most advances made on me while en femme are by people who find femininity attractive, be it heterosexual men or homosexual women.
Both go nowhere for obvious reasons, so the task for me is to find a heterosexual woman who can, at worst, tolerate my widespread fashion sense. One who appreciates or even enjoys it (i.e., fashion sense is something else we have in common) is ideal, but toleration is the only real requirement from me.
I still fail to see the connection between an unmotivated male and a male crossdresser. It’s not as though the male dregs of society are saying “Hey, my life is going nowhere, I’m going to put this dress on if nobody minds.”

Hey i long for the day when men /women can wear whatever they feel , without been ridiculed , i for one would love to go out in a skirt, mini mid , thigh whatever , i would team it with some nice tights , maybe fishnets ,finish off with some nice boots , i think it would be great , freedom of choice .I am not gay , i am happily married with children , but i feel if i wore this outfit in front of my family , then people might question my sexuality , which is a crying shame

I really hope that the women who protest at men wearing skirts never, ever wear trousers. They would be guilty of having double standards. According to what I have read above, any woman who wears trousers must be butch lesbian in the same way that men wearing skirts are homosexual gay. As a man happily married for over 33 years, skirts have their place, and for me that place needs to be warm.. I wouldn’t wear the same things in the winter that I wear in the summer, I’d be too cold. Nobody with any brain would do that. It’s a matter of wearing what’s right for the climate, occaision and what you’re doing. For example, even in the height of summer I would not wear a skirt when climbing ladders outdoors as much as my wife would enjoy it! Having said that at times I have diffuclty getting her to keep her hands off me when wearing a skirt. And P, as for anybody getting a glimpse of your panties, I suggest that if they are SO unmentionable you should consider buying new ones.

Actually, You are the one who’s acting like being a man is a curse, by saying it means people have to watch how they dress or act.
Another thing, Too many people are making the assumption that wearing women’s clothing is gay. Not only are gender and sexuality two totally different things, but the majority of transvestites are heterosexual males.
I don’t get why people think blurring gender lines in fashion or lifestyle is such a horrible crime. I don’t understand why it matters, really. Masculine culture supports a superficial strength and leadership, and everyone is secretly in fear of going against the standards prescribed to their gender. If yr gonna be a “man”, be a real one and dress however the hell you want. Don’t let other people define your gender like that.

well people, got say for the most part you got it wrong,, there is and old saying,,, clothes do not make the man,, yea that’s it.. Well they don’t.. Now just for a MIN,, TRY TO UNDERSTAND, THE SOCIAL CONCEPTS we all were raised with.. Boy’s play with toy solders, football,, baseball,,basketball,, oh yea hockey. America says men must be hard, take over,run things. Girl’s, female’s, women, are the weaker sex, (my ass) and they play with dolls, jump rope, cook and clean, sew, housework, ect. Now for all I want you to think only this way, equal, to be treated as one, no one is greater than another, all men,, and women, are created equal, endowed by the creator, with certain inalienilbe rights. Here I ask the question, does a man change who he is by what he wears? does putting on a dress or skirt change ones sex? The real question that needs to be ask is does one’s outer dress dictate who they are? Are we so shallow, that we look once and say OK, or hell no? Being from Detroit, and raised in the 50’s 60’s, I am reminded of a Temptation’s song,, Beauty is only skin deep”. Now I have had some who are the sexist females one could have, and some who should never see the light of day, yet if I am honest, looks, are on the outside, real beauty is on the inside,, not what you are ,,but who you are, what you stand for. I love my president, Obama, No I do not want to have sex with him. I love the man for giving me the dream, that each of us, can reach for the stars, and if we demand nothing but honor, a hard days work, except only honor, valor, equality, we shall not fail. So who i am is not dictated by what I wear, but how I treat my fellow citizen. We must get beyond what we see,, and accept what is. Old school logic, reasoning and wisdom.

Chase, I agree. I don’t get it either why people mix up gender, sex and combine it with clothes. 3 different things and “tutti-frutti”.
Everybody should wear what he/she likes, that’s all. Nobody critized women’s clothing after they stepped into pants anymore. Why we are doing that with men’s clothing.
Common sense: Nothing is more comfortable for a male body than a skirt, and that’s a fact, too.
And men are wonderful creatures which should have the same possibilities to express their personality like women do.

If a guy is wanting to wear a skirt then what about the girl who wishes to wear pants? Is she classified as a crossdresser also? Why is a male called many names when it comes to wearing a skirt but a female is ok to wear what she likes. Although women wear “men’s” clothing MOST OF THE TIME there is never any backlash or discussion about “NO WAY!! She’s a crossdresser!” or “you’re wierd, you wear men’s clothing”. It seems that the western world is deep into brainwashing fictual theories about men creating their own wardrobe as sexual idiots or weird people. Why is this so? Even Professor Julius Sumner Miller couldn’t answer this mystery since it’s neither scientific, nor factual, nor even included in the bible, koran, or any other religions. Did you know that I saw a picture of Jesus in a dress in a catholic home. Yes a catholic home who believes that men stick to trousers. My God even he wears a dress and according to the bible shouldn’t we follow what Deut. says? What a whole lot of nonsense. If men can’t wear what he likes then I now believe in Father Christmas as this fictitious brainwashing in Western Society is no different as creating Father Christmas, tooth fairy or the Easter bunny. No wonder the kids of today are confused about their mother. She’s wearing pants – “Oh! Isn’t that what daddy wears?” or “Is that you daddy?” If men aren’t allowed to wear a skirt in public then ask yourself “why”. If women can wear pants then why can’t men have the same choice? Get the facts NOT fiction. If a guy wears a skirt is considered a crossdresser then a woman wearing men’s clothing is called a crossdresser.

In some sense I do have to agree with LJ Knight, that the ensemble shown is ugly, but maybe because I hate the combination of skirts and leggins. If a woman would show up at my doorstep in such an ensemble, I would ask her to return after having changed into something which is more appaeling to the eye. But that is a matter of taste, and differences in taste will always be a cause for discussions.
As to the question if a man could wear a skirt or not. I guess that most arguments have been submitted already.
One I would like to pay extra attention to as used “boys want to be girls”. All those women now wearing trousers, T-shirts or even their husbands dress shirts end socks, aren’t those girls wanting to be a man? If so isn’t there a serious problem, when both sexes say of the other you want to be my sex? Back to basics, after leaving eden Adam and Eve both wore figleaves, whence the first clothing used was unisex. Stating it is mine and not yours fits a society which is becoming more narcistic by the minute.
As to the source of the argument male/female attire. In most cases the bible is quoted as the reason why one should not wear apparel of the other gender. One has to take into consideration that the Bible was written in the 4th century AD, and that the western Roman empire was crumbling. The church filled in the gap as to being the souvreign, where there was no king etc. The church used the absence of power in all aspects. Roman law was incorporated in to church law and in the last under Deutrimonium we will find the rule of not dressing in clothing of the other gender. In Roman law such was known already, for reason that they did not want creminals to escape by dressing as a person of the other gender and thus escaping capture. But look at the same time what the Romans were wearing, the women were wearing gowns, the men Toga’s and the soldiers what we would call miniskirts. The barbarians were using skins to cover their legs => leggings. Lateron you will see especially in painting with Florentine people, the pantyhose as common used by men.
When the first women started wearing trousers late 18th century the were considered nut cases and referred to a psychiatrist as they were considered hysterics.
As the next item has not been brought up yet, heels like skirts were by origin male attire, staring with the Egytian priests till the flower power era.
By the way, there are more skirt wearing men than one would consider in first instance, e.g. a man with a towel wrapperd around is basically a kilt without vastenings or a skirt without stiches and seams.
Now what is my own position on the matter. When driving long distances (> 1 hour) and sitting behind my desk I’ll be wearing a skirt as such is much more comfortable, no chrushed nuts.
Why did I start wearing skirts from time to time, as my ex indicated she would like such. In the end she used it as an argument for divorce.
If we look in nature, male species are in general more colorfull than the female species…
So let’s get back to basics and appreciate the other sex indifferent of the attire used! Appeciate the individuality above the dresscode of the jeans uniform.
