Are You Passionate About Your Passion?

“Passion is never giving up, until finished.”—Pastor Miles McPherson.

One thing that I can honestly say that I am passionate about is: passion. Is that even possible? Of course it is, because I am! In the sense, I mean that I am passionate about not only my passions in life, but also the passions of others. I want my friends and family to be inspired about something in life and be proactive about pursuing it. I once heard somewhere that, “if you do something you really love, you’ll never work a day in your life.” Now I’m sure that we’ve all heard similar sayings like this before, but there was no better environment than this one to truly witness what this quote had represented. I was in an environment where people ate, slept and breathed their passion, which happened to be music. (Okay, they didn’t really “eat” the music. Kind of impossible, but I swear they would have if they could!)

Now to be honest, I have never really known or cared to know all the odds and ends that music really entailed. To me, music was nothing other than the finished product I heard on the radio or got down to at the party on Tuesday (yes, I party on Tuesdays!)

Anyways, as it turned out it was much more than what my mind could have ever even imagined. Every minutesound and note must be specific and endearing to the ear. Because I was able see the amount of time, work and attention-to-detail put into a song, I am now able to appreciate every song I listen to as a polished piece of artwork (no matter how senseless the lyrics). It’s still art. This dedication to quality work is the same regard every passionate person should feel about any life project that they commit their time and heart to (even relationships). The experience, of seeing those go without sleep, seeing their families and friends, for the sake and adoration of perfected work and a desire that fed their souls, led me to believe that there are,no excuses. The kind of people with this ethic, possess a quality in today’s world that is few and far in between.

Parallel to this story, is in a recent film panel discussion given in my theatre class where a pre-major student asked another student film director how he managed his time in having to attend classes, work, maintain relationships, create films and handle all other personal responsibilities. The student director answered that he loved creating and editing films and because of this love (or passion) that he had, he didn’t mind staying up that extra hour at night, or waking up a couple of hours early to put in the extra leg work because he loved it so much.

If passion for a particular path in life is not something that is instinctual to you, it’s nothing to worry over because passion is something that can be developed or found. In order to do this, I think a good guideline is ‘The 5 P’s Plan’ that my pastor introduced at church. Keep this plan and use it as a reminder whether you’re seeking your passion, have already found it, or are helping others to pursue their passion.

The 5 p’s Plan:
You have been completely prepared to do something great.–Ephesians 2:10
There is a simple purpose behind everything you do.–1 John 5:3
Sometimes we will experience pain.–Hebrew 12:11
God has provided power for you to do something.–Ephesians 3:20
Doing something significant will require a passion that constantly screams, “Don’t Quit!”—Luke 9:62

*Lastly, I want to say that I am very lucky to have a few passionate people in my life that inspire me to work harder and keep going further everyday in my life. I’m sure they know who they are. Thank you.
