We all know that soda is not exactly coming from the earth’s fountain of sustenance. It is filled with sugar and empty calories and offers no real source of energy. However, is that enough to prevent shoppers who receive food aide from purchasing soda? NY Mayor Bloomberg says so. Bloomberg is asking the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which controls the food stamp program, for permission to institute a two-year ban that would affect the estimated 1.7 million city residents who receive food stamps. That time frame, he said, would permit health officials to study the health impact of such a ban. The request, according to the mayor’s office, would not in any way reduce food stamp eligibility or size of the food stamp benefit received by recipients.
What are we going to do without our sugary crack?! Non water drinkers in NY are in an uproar. Look, I’m not a fan of the government regulating every detail of our lives. However, when they are the ones who are offering you the assistance then you have to sometimes play by their rules. The fact remains that the people who this will affect are receiving assistance, and with assistance comes a certain amount of control that the person offering the assistance has over you. Is it fair? Not especially, but whenever a person receives help from anyone, there are consequences of it. It is the nature of the beast.
Personally, I think that some good could come from less soda. America’s kids are overweight and under exercised. A little less sugar in their diets will not hurt. If anything it will stop our kids urine from smelling like sugar snaps. I’m just sayin…Besides, if anyone absolutely must have some soda, they can always come out of pocket for it.
