Singer, song writer Sade is a world acclaimed artist. She and Lauryn Hill are two singers who are held in a mentor status while by other R and B singers consider themselves merely pupils in comparison. People idealize both of these women. Sade more so now than ever because like Hill, she was on hiatus for years while fans salivated at the thought of her uttering a chorus. Unlike Hill, her return while both celebrated- has been more successful. There have been no complaints about Sade’s performance or lack thereof as there have been complaints about Hill not appearing at scheduled performances.
This type of exaltation for Sade is to be expected at this point in her career. So when other artists, request that she collaborates with them on a song, it is only natural that she is somewhat particular in whom she decides to work with. For instance, recently, rapper Jay-Z requested a collabo with Sade and she declined. Her response was:
“I’m too scared. They’ll find me out. It’s like The Wizard of Oz. They’ll find out there’s nothing there. As for collaborations, I’m collaborating with the band and do what we do. I see myself as a member of this band who does these songs that we write.” Though she does add that in the unlikely event that an artist does get a sample of Sade’s music cleared it likely won’t cost them much. She jokes, “When it comes to sample clearances, I’m probably the cheapest chick in the west.”
Proposed Law Will Defend Driving While Black
It is much to ponder when considering what exactly Sade has to be afraid of? Could it be that she is weary of mixing her musical identity with rappers who often are labeled as thugs and ex-drug dealers with record deals (she is also said to have turned down rapper Drake as well)? Could it be as simple as her not being a fan of their music? Or could it be something deeper? Something more apprehensive in nature that we were not aware existed in Sade?
The statement in particular that makes me consider this is “I’m too scared. They’ll find me out. It’s like The Wizard of Oz. They’ll find out there’s nothing there.” Is it possible that after years of successful tours, album sales, performances and leaving fans panting, practically begging for her return Sade is still not convinced of her brilliance? Even after her successful return to music, a feat that not many artists can accomplish after a ten year plus hiatus, she is still so humble that she cannot see her own greatness and thinks that “nothing is there”?
I could totally be reading into this quote incorrectly so feel free to state your own thoughts about her statement. Either way I feel no resentment towards Sade turning down rappers or any other artists. I’m sure her fans prefer her individualistic artistry over any collaboration as well.
