I battled with myself over whether I was going to even comment on the whole Michelle Obama inviting Rapper Common to the White House for the poetry slam and Fox News going gorilla style over it. A part of me was baffled by the racism that was being displayed. Fox news once gave Common accolades during an interview for him being a rapper who did not focus on negativity and verbally abusing women in his lyrics. Reporter Jason Robinson interviewed the rapper for an October 2010 report for FoxNews.com and told him, “your music is very positive. And you’re known as the conscious rapper. How important is that to you, and how important do you think that is to our kids?” Now, a year later, they are referring to him as a “vile rapper”. Racist much?
He is Black, he is a rapper, so he must be bad news. However, no one refers to the many Rock legends with the same disgust. You know, the ones who were screwing groupies, cheating on their wives, making blasphemous comments about religion and God in their music, biting the heads off live birds during concerts, reciting misogynistic lyrics about women and sex, etc… Basically, exhibiting some of the same behavior if not worse as some of the rappers of today. Why is it that they never receive the same judgmental stares and opinions? The answer is because they are White and no matter how vile and inappropriate they may be, at the end of the day, White is always right. Do you smell that in the air? That’s White hypocrisy at its best. Gotta love the ish. Oh! Don’t forget to throw in a dash of sensationalism for good measure.
Having said that, I will now give you my opinion on the Common, Fox news and White House fiasco. You ready? Who gives an ish? That is my opinion. Why is it that every time White America, has a negative, clearly one sided and uneducated opinion about Black culture, Black folks become hysterical? Do you think White America is THAT concerned about what Black America feels towards them and their actions? No. Not at all. Why do we allow their opinions of our culture to upset us so much? Especially since, their opinions are generally uneducated, uniformed, and extremely one sided.

Case in point Ashley Judd. I don’t have any issues with this woman. I have seen a few of her movies; I dig how passionate she is about her causes. However, the recent release of her book where she mentions her opinions and outright disgust with Hip-Hop has Black America once again upset. Want to know my opinion on Ms. Judd’s thoughts on Hip-Hop? Ready?? Here you are: I have none. Frankly I could care less about this woman’s opinion on Hip-Hop than I could about a candy wrapper blowing in the air on a windy Chicago day.
Judd is not an authority on Hip-Hop. All she knows is what she hears on the radio and sees on the vides on MTV. Therefore her opinion are meaningless to me. Why should I care what a White, middle aged, wife and mother thinks of the music I listen to? I will say this… She of course has a point about SOME of the music that is in rotation. There are plenty of negative images in Hip-Hop. But they don’t make up the masses. There are positive rappers with a voice. Therefore one aspect of Hip-Hop does not make up my entire opinion on it. I know better. Unfortunately she is forming her opinions on is what she hears on the radio and on MTV. Trust me when I say that Judd did not do any formal research on Hip-Hop before writing this book.
When Rapper Nas made the claim that Hip-Hop was dying, I listened. Why? Because he knows what the hell is talking about. Hip-Hop has been the cornerstone of his life. He has a voice and valid opinions on it because he has earned it. He is a legend in the game. He has seen Hip-Hop at its best. When Judd talks about the situations and tragedies occurring in Africa and other countries, I listen. Why? Because she knows what the hell she is talking about. She has spent years traveling to these countries, giving to these people, seeing for her own eyes their turmoil. Therefore she is an authority on such topics. When she starts blabbing about Hip-Hop I want to tell her to shut up. Not because she has absolutely no valid points but because her knowledge of it is limited therefore so are her opinions on it. They simply don’t matter to me.
My point is, f**k Fox News. They have no real authority on Hip-Hop or the rapper Common and his rap career. They have no real knowledge of his rap catalogue and lyrics. They have no knowledge of what he stands for and that he is an empowering rapper. They have no knowledge of his past and his charity work. They don’t know that he is considered a positive political rapper. All they see is that he is a Black man and he raps therefore he must be unworthy. They pull out one spotty lyric of his and use that to dismiss him totally. Why should we care what they think? As long as the President and his wife are okay with having them in their homes then we should be too. Black people should stop obsessing over what people who know little to nothing about Black culture have to say. We should all be easy. That means you. I want to leave you with this: Would Fox News have such strong opinions over bird head biting, career drug head, rocker legend Ozzy Osbourne performing at the White House? Hmm… My guess is a big fat no.

You know what FOX really stands for, right? F*ck Over everyone Xcept white folks! A day when they actually report news free of chalk flavored bias is a day I doubt I'll ever see!
