Let the debate over whether this commercial is racist or that commercial is racist commence. Summers Eve is on the chopping block this week for their talking vagina/hand commercial. While some are like “dude, it’s a vagina..” others were immediately insulted by the talking Black woman’s vagina and I can understand why. Here is my small annoyance with the commercial. Why was there a need for the commercial to be so “sista girlish”? Why must we always have a “type”? It is becoming obvious to me that the powers that be think that minorities are walking, talking stereotypes and caricatures. As if the only way they could have connected to the Black demographic is if the talking vagina had a tone of “uhuh girl. Two snaps to that, with a side big hip bump and a gum crack”. This type of cartoonish portrayal of Blacks is becoming more and more prevalent. More and more the idea that Blacks don’t possess the ability to be dynamic is being used as marketing tools. There are only a few different representations of Blacks that are used in TV in marketing. To name a few there is the negro who is so happy to have found a FREE bucket of chicken sitting aimlessly on the sidewalk that he breaks into dance, or the sista girl whose attitude we see before we even are able to get a glimpse of her face. Let us not forget the super “cool”/swagged out negro.

I don’t think that this would be as much of a problem if there were more representations present of Blacks on TV and in marketing strategies. Do they really think we are that simple? It appears that the only way marketing strategist think that they can maintain the attention of Blacks is either with a lot of sass or a whole lot of dancing. Newsflash: We are more dynamic than that. Thoughts?
