Underrated singer/song writer Jasmine Sullivan dropped a new single titled “My Career”. In it she has a conversation with her man where she tells him that her career comes first and if that is something that he cannot handle then he should see the door.

Although, I am a firm believer in having my cake and eating it too, striking up a balance in life, I totally understand where she is coming from with this one! I always push women to never make finding a man, keeping a man, etc be your number one priority in life. This is not to say that it should not be of some importance to you at some time, it just should never be your number one or sole aspiration in life.

There are so many talented, educated, young women out there who give up on their own goals and dreams and settle, and yes I said settle, for being some dudes baby moma, or jump off. Who does that? Why limit your life to only being someone’s arm candy when you have so much more to give to this world? Besides, it has never been an issue when a man wants to focus on his career and financial security. It should never be one when a woman wants the same for herself. In today’s world no woman is guaranteed that a man will come and sweep her off her feet and want to be financially responsible for her for the rest of her life.

If I could scream it out to the heavens I would. Ladies, you should be your number one priority. This is especially true, if this man is not your husband and does not place you as a top priority in his world as well. Too many times women go out of their way to prove to a man how loyal they are. How much they love them. While the man is only half interested in her and does not devote the same time and energy into her or the relationship.

I know there are a lot of fellas out there who might now agree with me and think that a woman’s top concern should be pleasing and tending to his ass. Brotha please. This is coming from a woman who is in a healthy, stable, loving relationship. I think that if this man is not willing to compromise with you then he is not the one. No woman should be forced to settle in life just to be able to say that she has a man.
